Amaro and Stormy — Nardini's amaro in place of the rum, long over ice with ginger beer and lime

Amaro and Stormy

Nardini's amaro in place of the rum, long over ice with ginger beer and lime

Number of people

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ozAmaro Nardini
The gentian-and-peppermint bottling, not the Rosso
Substitute: Another gentian-led amaro with mint
  • 3 1/2 ozGinger Beer
Spicy rather than sweet, and very cold
  • 1/2 ozLime Juice
Fresh, and the only acid in the glass

Instructions

  1. Fill a tumbler with ice
  2. Add 1 1/2 oz Amaro Nardini and 1/2 oz lime juice
  3. Top with 3 1/2 oz cold ginger beer and stir gently, once

A hard stir knocks out the carbonation that carries the peppermint

  4. Garnish with a fresh sprig of mint

Technique Notes

Build it in the glass and stir gently, once. Ginger beer carries the amaro's peppermint upward, and a hard stir knocks out the carbonation that was doing the lifting.

Why the Amaro and Stormy Works

A Dark and Stormy runs on molasses; this one runs on gentian and peppermint, so the ginger has something cold to push against rather than something sweet. Lime keeps the amaro from turning syrupy, which at thirty-one percent and this length it otherwise would.
